Enigma

hey E are you planing on doing much tuneing with the engine or are you going to leave it NA?
The engine was a 1275cc MG metro engine , it has a stage 3 gas flowed race head with has over sized valves and has been machine to add 24cc and it ported and polished. Plus I have added the honda fireblade carbs which should give about 25% more torque over the mid range. I am also fitting a LCB manifold and straight through 2" exhaust.
So I guess you can say it will be tuned a bit :wink5:

What is the HP that engine can produce?
Enigma
09-17-2010, 09:38 PM
What is the HP that engine can produce?
standard engine is 73 bhp but no idea what this will be till its up and running and I can get it on a rolling road but this is taken from a site where the bike conversion has been done
The figures shown that top end performance was the same as the weber, but low to mid range power was up by appox 25% ie: at 4.5k we saw a power gain of 8 bhp and also saw gain of appox 25% on the torque in these areas also.
plus the stage 3 head is supposed to
achieve a 50% significant power increase, 30% increase in torque
But I am not sure what the guy has done to the engine he has or what cylinder head he has so I really won't know till it done

UPDATE
dragged myself out to the car tonight , didn't really want to see how bad it was , really glad I did.
firstly when I got the car the main wiring loom had been unwrapped , I repaired it and double wrapped it with insulation tape ( this has proved to be a good idea )
The damage is far less than I first thought , there is 1 wire that has burnt and its a wire that is not used , the rest are undamaged as the wrapping took the damaged , now it is removed the wires are fine
Altough the fuse box will need replacing as it has melted.
secondly , when I painted the car I used 2 pack paint and gave the car 4 coats , the panel above the wires in the picture took the full force of the fire and its hard to belive but all it has done is blister in a few places about the size of a pea , this will be easy to repair.
So good news all round and it shouldn't take me too long to repair , just replace the fuse box , re-wrap the loom and flat and paint a small area.
The carbs may need stripping and rebuilding but thats mainly hoses the were damaged.

this weekend is repair time , should have it back how it was before the fire ( except paint ) and get a few other bits done.
got a guy I know to work out some rough figures off the spec of my car and he seems to think it will somewhere around this ( hard to get true figures till its on a rolling road )
this the setup
engine - 1275cc 73 hp (54 kW) at 6000 rpm and 73 ft·lbf (99 Nm) at 4000 rpm (as standard)
stage 3 race head - +24cc with oversized valves
straight though single boxed centre exit sports exhaust
Honda fireblade throttle bodies ( yes the ones that caused the fire )
estimated figures are
90-95Bhp at flywheel
75-80Bhp at the wheels
85-90lb of torque
should be interesting to drive seeing as the weight is around 690 kg 1521 lb

Smith here is the calculations , these are not true as the software can not take into account the bike throttle bodies as they are not in the listed mods.
From what I read the throttle bodies can give upto 20% more BHP and torque.
Performance analysis...
Power at flywheel (bhp) : 89.585
Power at wheels (bhp) : 69.518
Transmission loss (bhp) : 20.067
Torque (lbft) : 94.100
0-60mph time (secs) : 8.062
Maximum speed (mph) : 120.951
Transmission ratio (mph/krpm) : 21.521
Quarter mile time (secs) : 15.214
Acceleration (g) : 0.339
Power to weight ratio (bhp/tonne) : 137.823
Specific output (bhp/litre) : 69.284
Fueling constant (bhp/mmsq) : 24.000
Tuning factor : 1.443
so the previous figures look good but add the 20%
89.585 + 20% = 107.50 BHP (more than first figures)
69.518 + 20% = 83.42 BHP @ wheels
94.100 + 20% = 112.92 lb torque
:crazy::crazy::crazy:

looks amazing E! hey what was the original width of the minis tires? it was 175 was it that sounds really wide.
most early mini's had 10" wheels and the standard sizes was 145/80 or 165/70 on coopers and early GT's, the 1275GT then went to 12" wheel followed by all the other models in 1983, the standard tyre sizes for a 1.0ltr model was 145/70 , 13" wheels were introduced late on in the mini's life and many options where then available for different sized tyres.
Mine are 175/50 13 which will not normally fit on a mini of this age but I have the wide arches and the origional arch under them has been cut back to take the larger wheel size , the back also have spacers on to push them out even more
